Effective “green” bleach alternatives?

by Green Shopper on at

Liz C asked:

I am in the process of replacing my toxic household cleaning products with environmentally friendly "green" alternatives. Most of them (dishwashing liquid, all-purpose cleaners) seem to work great, but I can't find a decent alternative to chlorine bleach and bleach-based products (Comet, Tilex, etc.) I would especially like an effective non-toxic cleaner for the bath that would work on mildew the way that bleach-based products do. Has anyone tried one that works? Thanks

Sorry, there’s a reason chlorine-based products rule the bleach world. Quite simply, they work much better than any other alternative.

“Going green” requires sacrifice – no more bright white clothes for you!

Chlorine is a natural organic compound, that exists naturally in water and in other sources.

Peroxide is expensive — I use it to clean my aquarium parts.

One of my daughters and I are chemically sensitive which will put either of us in bed with …guess what………..fibromyalgia. For washing clothes we use Oxyclean or borax with whatever liquid we can. We have no trouble with Era. For our tile, shower and bowl cleaner we have found two products that work well for us. One is a powder called Mrs.Meyer’s Clean Day. It contains calcium carbonate, bleach from a natural cleaning activator , plant derived surfactants, fragrance, and essential oils of Lemongrass, Peppermint, clover, Geranium and fur needle.
Another one we keep on hand is a spray cleaner called Peroxy Kling. It is an All Purpose Hydrogen Peroxide Cleaner/Degreaser, is environmentally safe and recommended for mold and mildew. Works well for us. Good luck. Miray

There’s a product called Simple Green that works well for general cleaning. Where you need to disinfect or kill nasty germs, a strong vinegar solution with hot water works very well. The acidity of the vinegar kills a good part of the germs and the heat kills even more. For mildew, make a paste of baking soda and salt and scrub it into the mildew areas. Then spray a 50/50 mix of vinegar and hot water onto it to make it bubble. That should take away the stain and the spores and leave the bathroom smell fresh again.
